El Sistema teacher Ron Alvarez met today with the In Harmony Liverpool team, to discuss the work of El Sistema in Venezuela, In Harmony in England and other Sistema-inspired programmes around the world. Ron had a chance to observe some of the music lessons at Faith Primary during the morning, and he said many teachers in Venezuela could learn from the excellent work that is being done in Liverpool with some of the younger children. Asked about how El Sistema maintains young musicians interested, Ron explained that the Venezuelans always include some challenging repertoire amongst the easier pieces. ‘This keeps the children inspired,’ he said. ‘Having a repertoire that keeps increasing its difficulty is key for us.’ During the next two weeks, Ron will be leading sessions at Faith Primary as well as the after school programme in Liverpool.
